It’s time to reflect on a wonderful project we were able to contribute to in 2022! Initiatives related to renewable energy support communities in their development. Our collaboration with Napenda Solar Community is a great example of this. Together with Deborah and Thiemo from Napenda Solar Community, we were able to bring affordable and sustainable energy solutions to rural areas in Kenya, with positive impacts on the lives of local residents.
Napenda Solar Community, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting access to clean energy founded by Deborah and Thiemo, joined forces with SamSam last year. The primary goal was to install solar panel systems in areas without access to the electricity grid, thus promoting socio-economic development and improving the quality of life for residents.
“Implementation and Impact”
The project began with a thorough assessment of the energy needs and available resources of the target communities. This formed the basis for the design and installation of customized solar panel systems. These systems could thus be fully tailored to the specific requirements of the locations. Solar panels were installed at various sites, such as households, schools, and healthcare facilities.
The impact of the project is remarkable. Reliable access to electricity has led to longer study hours for students, resulting in better educational opportunities. Local businesses have benefited from increased productivity and longer opening hours. Furthermore, health centers now have a constant power supply, allowing for proper storage of medicines and the use of essential medical equipment. Farmers have also greatly benefited from the solar panels. They have better insight into the weather and access to information on agricultural techniques.
“Community Engagement”
The success of the project depended not only on technological implementation but also on community engagement. Napenda Solar Community organized extensive training sessions to impart the necessary skills to the local population for the maintenance and repair of the solar panel systems. This knowledge transfer promoted the self-sufficiency of the local population and gave them the ability to take responsibility for their energy needs.
